Equation for Molarity Calculations

The definition of molarity:

"The molarity of any component is the number of moles of that component in 1000 cm3 of the total system."

leads to the following equation:

Molarity =                    Number of Moles                   
Volume of Total System (in dm3 or litres)

You need to be able to calculate all three parts of this equation if you know two of the others ie you need to be able to calculate:

  1. the molarity
  2. the number of moles present
  3. the volume of the total system
