Objectives

After finishing this activity, you should be able to:

1. define percent weight in volume
2. state what % w/v can be used to express the concentration of
3. describe how to prepare a product where concentration is expressed as % w/v
4. state an equation linking % w/v, mass of solute and total volume of product
5. do calculations involving % w/v ie you should be able to calculate:
   1. % w/v concentrations
   2. the mass of a solute in a specified amount of a product
   3. total volume of a preparation containing a specified amount of a component
6. understand that there at least two methods of doing the calculations - by using the equation, by using ratios.

Prerequisites

You will find it useful to know the basic units of mass and volume. You need to know what percentages are and how to calculate them. You will probably need a calculator.
