Introduction to Percent Weight in Volume


Percent weight in volume is one way of expressing concentration and is used, for example, to express the concentration of solutions of solids in liquids. It means the following:

The % w/v of any component is the number of grams of that component contained in 100 cm3 (or 100 ml) of the total product.



Percent weight in volume is also used for viscous liquids: it is difficult to measure the volume of viscous liquids and weight measurements are therefore more accurate.
For Example
A 5 % w/v aqueous solution of Dextrose
contains
5 grams of Dextrose in 100 cm3 of solution.
