Introduction To Pharmacokinetics

Introduction

GRAPHS, METHODS AND TERMINOLOGY

As stated, the value of pharmacokinetic parameters can be found from graphs plotting the plasma concentration of the drug against time and by using a few equations. This package briefly describes how to plot the required graphs - with particular reference to plotting on semilogarithmic axes.

To help you to interpret the graphs correctly, you need to understand how to use the methods below. If you are not familiar with these methods, you can work through activities demonstrating the methods.

  • The method of residuals
  • The trapezoidal rule

The package also covers some general terminology that you might encounter when reading about pharmacokinetics, including the terms first order elimination, nonlinear elimination and one and two compartment models.
